Where the Wild Things Play

April 6, 2014 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)
Weekly on the same day until May 18, 2014

Kids and adults alike will love the stories and songs, art activities and creative movement, “Where the Wild Things Play” at Washington Park.

We will make art and move our bodies this Spring as we explore the Sun, Sky, Earth and Pets with paints, clay, photo paper, a group collage and more! Make a Junque Sculpture for Earth Day. Share your pet’s story while you paint with bird feathers and the kitten’s yarn. And let’s talk about Love on Mother’s Day. Relax and let us worry about the mess — invest your time with your little Wild One…

April 6 – Sun
Gather: Light is both a wave and a particle. The sun casts shadows. You are my sunshine; you shine from the inside out.
Art Activity: Photo paper and found objects. Glue and glitter.
Creative Movement: People particles dancing with streamer waves.

April 13 – Sky
Gather: Moon light is a reflection of sun light. Birds and planes fly in the sky in the day, moths and fireflies at night. Rain falls from the sky.
Art Activity: Water color self portraits using mirrors. Masks.
Creative Movement: “Flying” and climbing to the sky on the playground.

April 20 – Earth
Gather: All living things breathe air, drink water, “eat” nutrients and make waste. Plants need good soil. Compost turns waste into nutrient rich soil.
Art Activity: Container garden. Clay.
Creative Movement: Connect to the Earth and grow like a tree with yoga.

April 27 – Reduce Re-use Recycle
Gather: Earth Day reminds us to take care of our surroundings. We can reduce, re-use and recycle in many ways.
Art Activity: Junque sculptures. Make sketch books, coloring books, journals.
Creative Movement: Using old clothing to make new fashion for an informal fashion show.

May 4 – Pets
Gather: Pets need our care. We give them nutrition, water, shelter and love. How to approach a dog you don’t know.
Art Activity: Feathers/birds. Yarn/cats. Scales/fish. Sand/lizards and hermit crabs.
Creative movement: Animal relays and playing fetch with a partner. Visit dog park.

May 11 – Love
Gather: Today is Mother’s Day! Families come in many varieties (Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Siblings, Steps, Halves, Together, Divorced, Gay, Straight, Different shades of skin). Love is kind, caring, compassionate and sometimes tough.
Art Activity: Group project collage mural
Creative Movement: Fountain

May 18 – Asian Food Fest
Gather: Asia is on the other side of the Earth from Cincinnati, OH, USA. People live there who eat and drink, grow and love, just like we do.
Art Activity: Rice and glue. Origami.
Creative Movement: TBD
